Workshop Overview

This 3-day workshop focuses on building large-scale coil-built ceramic forms with an emphasis on structure, proportion, and material awareness.

All levels are welcome. Prior clay experience is recommended to get the most out of the workshop, but beginners will receive step-by-step guidance.

Scale & Materials:
  • Standard size: up to 25” H × 18” W × 18” D
  • Optional larger size: up to 32” H × 24” W × 24” D (+$200)
  • Each student will have access to one full box of clay (20kg)

Day 1: Artist Talk + Demonstration + Setup

We’ll begin with a short artist talk with slides, followed by a live demo covering building strategies specific to scale, structure, and form.

After the talk and demo, we’ll move into individual consultations to refine your concept, scale, and approach, and develop a clear building strategy.

You’ll then create a full-scale template (1:1 drawing) to guide your build and begin constructing your base. We’ll focus on establishing a strong foundation and structural clarity, as this stage is critical to the success of the overall form.

Day 2 & 3: Building, Development & Refinement

The majority of the workshop is dedicated to hands-on building time. You’ll continue developing your forms with ongoing one-on-one guidance, focusing on structure, proportion, and stability as your work grows in scale.

Throughout the three days, I will rotate between students to provide feedback, troubleshoot challenges, and support each piece through its construction.

What We’ll Cover

Over the 3 build days, students will gain experience in:
  • Coil-building strategies for larger forms
  • Maintaining proportion and stability during construction
  • Moisture control and effective attachment
  • Preparing the building surface to allow safe shrinkage and movement
  • Learning when and how to use a heat gun to support structure, strength, and building momentum
  • Internal supports for strength and balanced weight
  • Drying and firing considerations for large-scale work
  • Post-firing solutions (e.g. epoxies for joining ceramic elements)

🧹 The last 15 minutes of each class are reserved for cleanup.

Bisque Firing (Included)

Firing is included in the workshop fee.

All work is bisque-fired using a custom slow program for large-scale ceramics, along with two weeks of careful drying, and daily monitoring, handled by me outside of workshop hours.

All work will be ready by July 19.
Pickup must occur within 2 weeks.

Storage beyond August 1 will be charged at $10/day.

Glaze firing

Glaze Firing is available upon request at a flat rate of $50 per kiln shelf (+tax). This can be decided after the workshop, depending on your work and intended finish.
