The installation will be grounded by six large-scale ceramic sculptures showcasing Tsang’s signature fusion of whimsy, emotional intensity, and personal symbolism. As a backdrop to these new works, Tsang will install a large-scale wall mural, which will be drawn onsite. The spontaneous work mirrors her artistic philosophy—her works function as an ongoing diary, negotiating the complexities of bicultural identity. Her fantastical figures, infused with Chinese symbols and personal iconography, create a new visual language within the ceramic form. A recurring motif—the panda, a revered figure in both Chinese and Western cultures—explores themes of duality, adaptation, and camouflage. The mural will weave these symbolic elements into a visual narrative of cultural inheritance, autonomy, and the ‘code-switching’ required to navigate different identities. At EXPO Chicago, Tsang’s installation becomes a living site of meaning-making. They use illustrations, motifs and figures to express personal narratives and insight into their thoughts and ideas. Bickers and Tsang record the drama of daily life (both exterior and interior), exploring memory, emotion and imagination. Their works are instruments of storytelling and bearers of meaning. For Bickers, her ceramic vessels are an expression of insatiable yearning with each piece carrying a different link to the many expressions felt when in a state of infatuation. With an emphasis on the female gaze, these pots celebrate the sweetness of queer desire while also admiring the similarities of a new crush blooming to the many flowers that pop up in spring. Tsang resists her traditional Chinese role by gathering stories of struggles in domestic encounters and private narratives. When her heart allows, she converts these stories using cartoonish-like gestures and straightforward imagery to help make the memories bearable, revealing the raw emotional experiences we all share. A Good Hard Look, showcases a remarkable collection of sculptures and drawings that not only manifest Tsang’s artistic prowess but also reveal her deep-seated emotions and inner conflicts. While winding my way through the collection of pieces, I was taken aback by a ceramic work by Sami Tsang. Titled Still We Rise, it’s a female figure possessing a textile braid and boasting an assemblage of sketchbook-y drawings across her glazed frame; an assortment of faces protrude from various body parts as well. It’s truly astonishing to gaze upon – I’d never seen anything like it – and I found myself circling around its plinth several times, gasping as each new detail came into my view. “My work talks about mystic encounters, private matters and inner struggle,” says Tsang, noting that her artistic practice deals with mental health. “These stories are drawn from myself or through intimate conversations with other people. And sometimes, [they’re] imaginary.” Indeed, I recognized an element of fantasy permeating Tsang’s captivating sculpture. Coupled with the intimate tension she expresses, a haunting quality is exposed that lingers with you long after your eyes have left it. And what’s more, the sense of surprise the piece inspired in me – despite the fact I’d followed her work on Instagram for some time – roused such curiosity in Tsang’s art that I just had to know more about this young talent, who was the recipient of the Gardiner Museum Prize in 2019. “I’m a pretty open person and I do share a lot of my personal story with people,” she says as we discuss the fact that while I couldn’t wait to see what my eyes came to next on her sculpture, I know other onlookers might not have that same zeal for examining the piece. But that doesn’t seem to bother Tsang. “Over time, I’ve developed more of an instinct with what I want to share with people – who really cares, or if someone is listening but doesn’t really get it,” she says. “It’s similar with audiences of my work; some people will just walk past [it], and some people will really see it and what I’m trying to talk about with the piece without me having to suggest too much. Scale &amp; Materials:&nbsp; Standard size: up to 25”h × 18” × 18” Optional larger size: up to 32”h × 24” × 24” (+$200) Each student has access to one full 20kg box of clayArtist Talk + DemonstrationWe’ll begin with a short artist talk with slides, followed by a live demo covering building strategies specific to scale, structure, and form.&nbsp;After the talk and demo, the rest of each day is dedicated to building, with ongoing one-on-one guidance.What We’ll Cover (Build Days)Over the two build days, students will gain experience in: Coil-building strategies for larger formsMaintaining proportion and stability during construction Moisture control and effective attachment Preparing the building surface to allow safe shrinkage and movement Learning when and how to use a heat gun to support structure, strength, and building momentum Internal supports for strength and balanced weight Drying and firing considerations for large-scale work Post-firing solutions (e.g. epoxies for joining ceramic elements) 🧹 The last 15 minutes of each class are reserved for cleanup.Firing (Not Included)Firing is not included in the base workshop fee.If you do not add the firing option, you must take your piece home at the end of Day 2.&nbsp; Optional: Bisque Firing – $50Includes two weeks of careful drying, daily monitoring, and bisque firing, handled by me outside of workshop hours.All bisque-fired work will be completed by March 15th.If you choose not to join the glaze/painting workshop, pickup must occur within the same week. We’ll cover: Underglaze preparation Water and pigment control Brush handling for different line qualities and textures Practice begins on rice paper and ink before moving onto bisqued ceramic work. You may focus on underglaze painting, use studio glazes only, or combine both approaches. 📸 Finished work will be professionally photographed by me. Images will be edited in Lightroom and shared digitally for your personal documentation and portfolio use. Tsang studied traditional Chinese painting for seven years in Hong Kong, a foundation that continues to influence her visual language and material approach. She earned a BA in Craft &amp; Design from Sheridan College (2019) and an MFA in Ceramics from Alfred University (2021). From 2021 to 2025, she was an Artist-in-Residence in Ceramics at Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States, and China, including Claire Oliver Gallery (New York), Cooper Cole Gallery (Toronto), AYE Gallery (Beijing), The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Gardiner Museum, Sculpture Space NYC, Toronto Art Fair, NADA Miami, and EXPO Chicago. Tsang is the recipient of the 25th Annual Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, and her work is held in the Gardiner Museum, the North Dakota Museum of Art, Collection Majudia, and numerous private collections. She works from her independent studio in Toronto, expanding her practice through sculpture, hybrid storytelling, and explorations of cultural and emotional narratives. Artist Statement Being genuine is central to who I am. Mediated through materials and self-reflection, my work is a raw, truthful, and spontaneous response to lived experiences, driven by an urgency to ask, What is so pressing? This question guides my exploration of resilience, displacement, and belonging, themes shaped by my family’s migration story and my identity as a Chinese-Canadian artist. The initial sketches that inform my work draw inspiration from Chinese proverbs rooted in my childhood memories. Themes of humor, vulnerability, and challenging tradition are interwoven with reflections on overcoming the complexities of childhood and adolescence. My sculptures often respond to moments when I felt repressed and silenced, transforming these emotions into bold, liberated forms that embody transition and self-expression. When creating ceramic sculptures, I work from a meditative place, allowing each piece to evolve intuitively through layered additions. My process brings together ceramics, textiles, and resin, creating playful yet poignant characters that reflect personal and cultural narratives. These figures hold the tensions of transformation and unresolved emotions, inviting viewers to navigate dualities such as tradition and rebellion, grief and hope, and adaptation and resistance. As I continue to have difficult conversations with myself, my work celebrates identity while challenging its boundaries—holding space for complexity and connection.
