 2-Day Ceramic Workshop: Large-Scale Handbuilding

February 28th & March 1st (Sat - Sun)

๐Ÿ’ต Price: $450 + HST per person                               

Workshop Overview

This 2-day workshop focuses on building large-scale coil-built ceramic forms with an emphasis on structure, proportion, and material awareness.

All levels are welcome. Prior clay experience is recommended to get the most out of the workshop, but beginners will receive step-by-step guidance.

Scale & Materials: 
  • Standard size: up to 25โ€h ร— 18โ€ ร— 18โ€
  • Optional larger size: up to 32โ€h ร— 24โ€ ร— 24โ€ (+$200)
  • Each student has access to one full 20kg box of clay

Artist Talk + Demonstration

Weโ€™ll begin with a short artist talk with slides, followed by a live demo covering building strategies specific to scale, structure, and form. After the talk and demo, the rest of each day is dedicated to building, with ongoing one-on-one guidance.

What Weโ€™ll Cover (Build Days)

Over the two build days, students will gain experience in:
  • Coil-building strategies for larger forms
  • Maintaining proportion and stability during construction
  • Moisture control and effective attachment
  • Preparing the building surface to allow safe shrinkage and movement
  • Learning when and how to use a heat gun to support structure, strength, and building momentum
  • Internal supports for strength and balanced weight
  • Drying and firing considerations for large-scale work
  • Post-firing solutions (e.g. epoxies for joining ceramic elements)

๐Ÿงน The last 15 minutes of each class are reserved for cleanup.

Firing (Not Included)

  • Firing is not included in the base workshop fee.
  • If you do not add the firing option, you must take your piece home at the end of Day 2. 

Optional: Bisque Firing โ€“ $50

  • Includes two weeks of careful drying, daily monitoring, and bisque firing, handled by me outside of workshop hours.
  • All bisque-fired work will be completed by March 15th.
  • If you choose not to join the glaze/painting workshop, pickup must occur within the same week. (Morning to evening pickups available by arrangement.)
  • Storage beyond March 22nd will be charged at $10/day, as studio space is limited.

Optional Add-On: Glazing & Painting Day


 March 15th (Sunday) 

๐Ÿ’ต $300+ HST (includes glaze firing & professional documentation)   
โฐ 10:00 AMโ€“5:00 PM

This one-day class focuses on underglaze painting and surface finishing, inspired by traditional Chinese painting techniques.

Weโ€™ll cover:
  • Underglaze preparation
  • Water and pigment control
  • Brush handling for different line qualities and textures

Practice begins on rice paper and ink before moving onto bisqued ceramic work.

You may focus on underglaze painting, use studio glazes only, or combine both approaches.

๐Ÿ“ธ Finished work will be professionally photographed by me. Images will be edited in Lightroom and shared digitally for your personal documentation and portfolio use.

Materials & Firing

  • A selection of slips, glazes & underglazes will be provided โœจ
  • Cone 6 clay and cone 6 glaze firing only. Outside cone 6 glazes welcome upon approval.
  • Cracks may happen - part of the clay journey! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Pickup & Storage

Kiln firing will be finished and ready to unload on March 17th at 12:00 PM
  • Pickup must occur within the same week. (Morning to evening pickups available by arrangement.)
  • Storage beyond March 22nd will be charged at $10/day, as studio space is limited.

Policies

  • No refunds, rescheduling, or makeup classes.
  • Workshop process and work may be photographed for documentation and promotion.
